What Is New in 2026

Longer in-study work hours. From November 3, 2025, eligible students can work up to 25 hours a week during term. Students with an older 20-hour condition may need to request a variation or apply again to benefit.

Updated student visa fees. The cost of a fee-paying student visa has increased, and a visitor conservation and tourism levy applies. Figures quoted by different sources range from about NZD 750 to 850, so confirm the exact fee when you lodge.

Faster digital processing. Applications are filed through Immigration Online. Many complete applications are being processed within a few weeks, but timing varies, so apply early.

Wider post-study work options from November 16, 2026. A new six-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa will be available to graduates of Level 5 to 7 qualifications who do not qualify for the main Post Study Work Visa, and the main visa is being opened to Level 7 graduate diploma holders who also hold a bachelor’s degree.

Post Study Work Visa. Degree graduates may be eligible for up to three years, depending on qualification and level.

Rules change quickly, so we check Immigration New Zealand updates before every case.

Your Pathway: Study, Work, Residence

Think of New Zealand as a ladder with clear steps.

Step 1: Study. Choose a course at an approved provider, ideally one that matches a skill New Zealand needs.

Step 2: Work while you study. Part-time work during term and full-time work in scheduled breaks help you build experience and manage costs.

Step 3: Post-study work. Eligible graduates apply for a Post Study Work Visa or, from November 2026, the new short-term graduate visa.

Step 4: Skilled work and residence. Experience, a skilled job and meeting the points and requirements of the relevant residence pathway can lead to permanent residence. Residence rules also change, so we plan this with you early.

If you are searching for a study and work in New Zealand agency, this pathway thinking is what separates a short-term application from a long-term plan.
