British Columbia PNP in 2026: What Has Changed and Who Actually Gets Invited

If you have been reading about the British Columbia PNP over the last year, you have probably noticed that the advice online does not match anymore. Streams have closed, draws look different, and old scores mean very little. That is because British Columbia rebuilt the program around a smaller number of nominations and a sharper set of priorities.

So instead of repeating the old brochure, this page tells you where things stand today, in plain language, and helps you work out whether this route fits your profile.

BC PNP at a Glance

  • What it is: The British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP) is the province’s own economic immigration route to Canadian permanent residence.
  • 2026 allocation: 6,254 nominations. The year opened at 5,254, and the federal government added 1,000 more on August 18, 2026. BC had originally asked for 9,000.
  • Two main pathways: Skills Immigration for workers, and Entrepreneur Immigration for business owners.
  • Job offer: Needed for Skills Immigration. Not needed for the entrepreneur route.
  • Registration fee: None. The Skills Immigration application fee is CAD 1,750 (raised from CAD 1,475 on January 22, 2026).
  • Bonus: A nomination adds 600 CRS points if you are in the Express Entry pool.

Why 2026 Feels Different

Think of the BC PNP as a small door that got narrower, then got repainted. Fewer nominations are available than the province says it needs, so it now invites people in specific categories instead of running broad weekly draws.

On April 23, 2026, British Columbia announced three big shifts. The Entry Level and Semi-Skilled stream was officially closed (its last invitations went out in December 2024). The planned new student streams were dropped. And the whole program was reorganised around three themes: Care, Build and Innovate.

The province also wants at least 35 percent of nominations to go to people working outside Metro Vancouver. If your job is in Kelowna, Prince George, Nanaimo or a smaller community, that is a real advantage worth taking seriously.

Two Doors Into British Columbia

This is where most workers land. You choose between two streams, depending on your job offer:

  • Skilled Worker stream. You need a full-time, indeterminate job offer from an eligible B.C. employer in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 occupation, at least two years of full-time equivalent work experience, and a minimum of CLB 4 in language.
  • Health Authority stream. You need a full-time, indeterminate job offer from a B.C. health authority in an eligible health occupation.

Both streams come with an Express Entry BC option. If you are already in the federal pool and meet the criteria, selecting that option links your provincial nomination to your federal profile, which usually makes the PR stage smoother.

Care, Build, Innovate: Which One Sounds Like You?

This is the part most applicants skip, and it matters most for PNP for British Columbia in 2026.

Care covers 36 in-demand occupations across health care, education, childcare and veterinary care. If you are a registered nurse, a health care assistant, an early childhood educator, a veterinary technologist or a teacher (French-speaking K-12 teachers are specifically wanted), this is your lane. Certified early childhood educators have been invited in the largest numbers recently.

Build is for nine certified skilled trades behind the province’s construction and infrastructure push: welders, electricians, plumbers, steamfitters, carpenters, millwrights, heavy-duty mechanics, HVAC mechanics and similar. One catch: you need a valid SkilledTradesBC certificate or a registered apprenticeship to get a targeted invitation. Experience alone is not enough.

Innovate works through High Economic Impact invitations, aimed at top talent in any sector, including experienced entrepreneurs. Think very high wages or very high scores, not average ones.

If your job fits none of these, that does not automatically rule you out, but it means competing in a much tougher pool.

From Registration to PR: How It Actually Unfolds

  1. You pick your stream and decide whether to use the Express Entry BC option.
  2. You register online through the BC PNP portal. There is no fee, and you receive a score.
  3. You wait. Invitations come from periodic draws, and your registration stays active for 12 months.
  4. If invited, you get 30 calendar days to submit a complete application. Missing that window removes you from the pool.
  5. You pay the CAD 1,750 fee and upload your documents.
  6. If approved, you receive a nomination and a Confirmation of Nomination letter.
  7. You then apply to IRCC for permanent residence before the nomination expires. Federal fees and processing times are separate.

What You Will Need to Prove

Your registration is self-declared, but every claim has to be backed up later. Expect to provide a valid job offer with an Employer Declaration Form, employment letters and pay records, education certificates (with an ECA if studied abroad), language test results, and identity and status documents. Mismatches between what you declared and what you upload are one of the most common reasons files fail.

Also be aware that some occupations are excluded from every Skills Immigration stream, including executive assistants, administrative officers, HR officers, accounting technicians and bookkeepers, retail and food service supervisors, real estate agents and religious workers.

Mistakes We See Again and Again

Registering without a real plan. A score alone is not a strategy. If your occupation is not in Care or Build and your score is modest, you may wait a long time.

Ignoring the job offer details. The offer must be full-time, indeterminate and from an eligible employer. A weak or poorly documented offer can sink an otherwise good profile.

Overlooking Express Entry BC. If you are eligible for both, using the Express Entry option can save time later.

Following outdated advice. Plenty of websites still describe the Entry Level stream or tech draws as if they were open. They are not.

Missing the 30-day deadline. Once invited, gather documents early.

Is British Columbia the Right Fit for You?

If you work in health care, childcare, education or a certified trade, and you have or can get a B.C. job offer, the British Columbia provincial nominee program deserves a serious look. If you are a high earner, the High Economic Impact route may help. If you work outside Metro Vancouver, the regional preference can work in your favour.

If none of that fits, other provinces or federal Express Entry may suit you better, and an honest assessment saves you money and time.

What is the SIRS Calculator (Skills immigration registration system)?

The SIRS Calculator is a points based system used by British Columbia (BC), Canada to rank candidates who want to apply for permanent residency through the BC Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP).

Here’s what it does in simple terms:

  1. SIRS stands for Skills Immigration Registration System – it helps BC choose the best candidates for immigration.

  2. You get points based on factors like:

    • Job offer in BC

    • Work experience

    • Education

    • Language skills (English or French)

    • Wage of your job offer

    • Where in BC your job is located

  3. The SIRS Calculator gives you a total score out of 200.

  4. Candidates with the highest scores are invited to apply for a provincial nomination.

  5. It is mainly used for BC PNP’s Skills Immigration and Express Entry BC streams.

Alberta PNP (AAIP) does not use the SIRS system it is specific to British Columbia.
