Top 10 Universities in Dubai for 2026: Rankings, Fees and How to Choose

Updated 15 September 2026 using the QS World University Rankings 2027 (released 18 June 2026) and the QS Arab Region University Rankings 2026.

Dubai has one of the largest clusters of international branch campuses in the world. That gives you a lot of choice, but it also makes the search confusing. A campus in Dubai can be a local private university, a federal university, or a branch of a university in the UK, Australia, the USA or India. Each one ranks, charges and awards degrees differently.

The top universities in Dubai for 2026 are Zayed University, Canadian University Dubai, American University in Dubai, University of Dubai and The British University in Dubai, plus the Dubai campuses of the University of Birmingham, University of Wollongong, Heriot-Watt University, Middlesex University and RIT.

Zayed University (588th), Canadian University Dubai (joint 616th) and American University in Dubai (joint 620th) are the highest QS ranked institutions with Dubai campuses. If you want a degree from a global top 100 university without leaving the region, University of Birmingham Dubai awards the same degree as its UK parent, which is ranked 68th.

Why study in Dubai in 2026?

Dubai attracts students for practical reasons. It is a short flight from most Indian cities, English is the everyday language of business, and the city hosts regional offices for companies in finance, logistics, aviation, real estate, technology and hospitality.

The wider UAE system is also improving fast. In the QS World University Rankings 2027, nine of the UAE's 12 ranked universities moved up, eight reached their best ever position, and the country now has six universities in the global top 500, up from three five years ago. UAE universities also lead the world on average for international faculty.

There is one thing to understand from the start. Dubai is a great place to earn an international degree and start a career, but it is not a permanent residency destination like Canada or Australia. We cover what that means in the section on life after graduation.

Top 10 universities in Dubai 2026 at a glance

Rankings for Dubai are not as simple as a single list. Some universities are ranked by QS in their own name. Branch campuses are not ranked separately, so the number shown is the parent university's rank. The British University in Dubai appears only in the QS Arab Region table. The column below tells you exactly which rank you are looking at.

How we built this list: We placed universities with their own QS 2027 rank first, in rank order, then added the most established branch campuses. A parent rank tells you about the degree you receive and the university behind it. It does not rank the Dubai campus itself, so compare course, fees and support as well.

Why do some lists call CUD the number one university in Dubai? Canadian University Dubai says it has been the top ranked university in Dubai for six consecutive years under QS. Zayed University sits higher overall, but it is a federal university that operates across Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Both statements can be true depending on how "Dubai university" is defined.

Best universities in Dubai for international students: detailed profiles

1. Zayed University

Founded1998
QS 2027588 (record high)
CampusesAbu Dhabi and Dubai

Zayed University is one of the UAE's three federal universities and is named after the country's founding father. It was the first UAE university to earn US accreditation from the Middle States Commission, and its business school is AACSB accredited. It is known for business, education, and programmes focused on AI and digital transformation.

Good to know: Zayed mainly serves Emirati students and has a small international cohort. QS lists undergraduate fees for international students at roughly US$20,000 to US$22,000 a year. Check international eligibility before you shortlist it.

2. Canadian University Dubai (CUD)

QS 2027Joint 616
CampusCity Walk, Downtown Dubai

CUD follows a Canadian inspired curriculum and offers more than 25 accredited undergraduate and graduate degrees with over 30 majors and concentrations. It ranks 21st in the QS Arab Region Rankings 2026 and scores strongly for international faculty and students. It recently added a Doctor of Business Administration and a BSc in Power and Renewable Energy Engineering.

Good to know: CUD is licensed by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR). Published guides place annual tuition at roughly AED 60,000 to AED 138,000 depending on the programme. CUD has also kept links with Ontario's Centennial College for students interested in transferring.

3. American University in Dubai (AUD)

Founded1995
QS 2027Joint 620 (up from 678)
CampusDubai Media City

AUD offers an American style education and is accredited in the USA by SACSCOC. Its business school holds AACSB accreditation and runs an Executive MBA designed with Cornell's SC Johnson College of Business. Its School of Architecture, Art and Design is the first outside the USA to hold NAAB, CIDA and NASAD accreditation together.

Good to know: AUD moved up 58 places in QS 2027 and ranks 47th in the QS Arab Region table. It is a strong choice for architecture, design, communication and business, and its location puts you close to media and corporate employers.

4. University of Dubai (UD)

Founded1997
QS 2027781 to 790 (record high)
Licensed byMoHESR

University of Dubai grew out of an institution set up to close workforce gaps in the emirate, and it took its current name in 2006. It first entered the QS World University Rankings in 2023 and reached its best position this year, rising from the 851 to 900 band. It ranks 81 to 90 in the QS Arab Region table.

Good to know: UD is best known for business and IT, and its business college holds AACSB accreditation. It is a practical option if you want a locally accredited degree with a Dubai employer network.

5. The British University in Dubai (BUiD)

Founded2003
QS Arab 202671 to 80
CampusDubai International Academic City

BUiD is a research based, not for profit university established by Dubai law. It focuses on postgraduate and doctoral study, with PhD programmes in business management, project management, engineering management, sustainable built environments, computer science and business law.

Good to know: BUiD suits master's and PhD applicants more than school leavers. Aggregated ranking sites often place it near the top among Dubai institutions because of its research output.

6. University of Birmingham Dubai

Parent QS 202768 (highest in a decade)
DegreeSame as UK campus
CampusDubai International Academic City

Birmingham was the first global top 100 and Russell Group university to open a campus in Dubai. The degree awarded in Dubai is identical to the one awarded in the UK and is accredited locally by Dubai's Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). Programmes started with business, computer science, economics, mechanical engineering and teacher training.

Good to know: Fees at the Dubai campus were set close to UK levels, so this is usually one of the more expensive options. The trade off is a top 100 degree with Dubai living costs and a shorter flight home.

7. University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD)

Founded in Dubai1993
Parent QS 2027195
CampusDubai Knowledge Park

UOWD was the first Australian university in the UAE. Students receive a degree from UOW Australia, which is ranked 195th in the world and 13th in Australia in QS 2027. It offers foundation, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral study.

Good to know: UOWD is a solid pick if you want an Australian qualification at a lower total cost than studying in Australia. If you later plan to move to Australia, read our study in Australia guide to compare routes.

8. Heriot-Watt University Dubai

Parent QS 2027325
Known forEngineering, business, design
CampusDubai International Academic City

Heriot-Watt was the first UK university to open a campus in Dubai International Academic City. The Scottish parent specialises in business, science, technology, engineering and design, and students can transfer between its campuses in Edinburgh, Dubai and Malaysia for part of their study.

Good to know: Heriot-Watt was one of the highest rated campuses when KHDA first published star ratings for Dubai branch campuses, and it offers merit scholarships. It is popular with engineering and construction students.

9. Middlesex University Dubai

Opened2005
Parent QS 2027901 to 950
Students7,100+ from 120+ nationalities

Middlesex Dubai was the London university's first overseas campus and now runs across two sites in Dubai Knowledge Park and Dubai International Academic City. It is one of the largest branch campuses in the city, with a teaching and employability focus rather than a research focus.

Good to know: The parent's QS position has fallen in recent editions, but Middlesex remains popular with Indian students for business, media and computing because of its size, support services and relatively moderate fees.

10. RIT Dubai

Founded2008
ParentRochester Institute of Technology, New York
CampusDubai Silicon Oasis

RIT Dubai is a branch of the private US research university and is known for engineering, computing and business. In June 2026, MoHESR added RIT Dubai to its Automatic Recognition initiative, which means graduates' qualifications are recognised in the UAE on graduation without a separate application.

Good to know: That recognition step matters if you plan to work in the UAE, especially in government linked or regulated roles.

Other universities in Dubai worth a look

Several other institutions are strong for specific goals. Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Government focuses on public policy and administration at master's level. Hult International Business School runs business programmes from Dubai. Murdoch University Dubai and Curtin Dubai offer Australian degrees, and Murdoch allows some students to move to its Perth or Singapore campus after a year. Dubai College of Tourism is a vocational option for hospitality, culinary arts and events.

Local university vs international branch campus in Dubai: which degree do you actually get?

This is the question students ask most, and the answer shapes your whole plan.

  • Local private universities such as CUD, AUD and University of Dubai award their own UAE degree, licensed by MoHESR.
  • Federal universities such as Zayed University are government institutions that mainly serve Emirati students.
  • International branch campuses such as Birmingham, Wollongong, Heriot-Watt, Middlesex and Murdoch usually award the parent university's degree. Murdoch, for example, says its Dubai graduates receive the same degree certificate issued in Perth.

Branch campuses in Dubai's free zones are licensed by KHDA and remain regulated by their home country too. Murdoch's Dubai campus, for instance, is also covered by Australia's higher education regulator, TEQSA.

Is a Dubai branch campus degree recognised in India and the UAE?

Recognition is where students most often get caught out, so check it before you pay a deposit.

In the UAE: In 2022, Murdoch University raised a concern that the UAE had stopped issuing equivalency for degrees completed at KHDA registered branch campuses, even when the certificate matched the home campus degree. The situation has been moving since then. By June 2026, MoHESR's Automatic Recognition initiative covered around 41 institutions, with a target of 102, and it added RIT Dubai in its latest round. If you plan to work in the UAE, ask your university in writing how graduates obtain recognition or equivalency.

In India: Foreign degrees are usually evaluated through the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) equivalence process when you need them for further study or some jobs. Ask the university whether previous Dubai campus graduates have received equivalence for your exact programme, and keep copies of your transcripts and study mode details.

Also check licensing: In 2022, Dubai's Al Falah University lost its accreditation and licence after being placed on probation. The UAE has since approved penalties of up to AED 500,000 for unlicensed higher education institutions. A genuine university should appear on the KHDA or MoHESR registers.

How much does it cost to study in Dubai? University fees and living costs for Indian students

Undergraduate tuition in Dubai typically ranges from about AED 40,000 to AED 100,000 a year. Postgraduate programmes commonly run from AED 50,000 to AED 100,000, while engineering and medicine can reach AED 100,000 to AED 160,000.

INR figures use an approximate rate of ₹23.5 per AED and are rounded. Exchange rates move, and universities also add charges such as VAT, lab fees and deposits. Always check the official fee page for your intake.

Money saving tip: Many students study in Dubai but live in Sharjah, where rent is lower, and commute by metro and bus. Zayed University, for example, lists student housing from AED 1,500 a month for a shared room, with food extra.

Can international students work part time while studying in Dubai?

Yes, but not on a student visa alone. To work legally you need:

  1. A job offer from a licensed UAE employer.
  2. A No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your university.
  3. A work permit applied for by the employer through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), or through the relevant free zone authority.

Hours in term time are set by your permit and university NOC. Most guidance puts the limit at around 15 to 20 hours a week, with full time work allowed during official breaks. Common roles include retail, hospitality, tutoring, campus jobs and digital marketing.

Be realistic: Part time income can help with rent and daily costs, but it will not cover tuition at most universities. Working without a permit can lead to visa cancellation and a re entry ban, so never accept cash in hand work.

What happens after graduation? Jobs, Golden Visa and the no PR reality

Your student visa is sponsored by your university and ends with your studies. After that, you have three main paths.

  • Employer sponsored work visa. This is the most common route. You find a job and your employer sponsors your residence visa. Income in the UAE is not subject to personal income tax.
  • Golden Visa for outstanding graduates. Abu Dhabi's official guidance sets a GPA of at least 3.5 for Class A universities or 3.8 for Class B universities, graduation within the last two years, and a Ministry attested degree. Graduates of a global top 100 university need at least a 3.5 GPA. Read the official graduate Golden Visa criteria.
  • Further study or a move abroad. Many graduates use a Dubai degree and Gulf work experience to apply for master's programmes or skilled migration in countries like Canada, the UK or Australia.

No permanent residency: The UAE does not offer PR or an easy path to citizenship for most expatriates. Even a Golden Visa is long term residency, not PR. If settling permanently is your main goal, compare Dubai with studying in Canada or Australia before you decide.

Cheapest and affordable universities in Dubai: realistic options

There is no single cheapest university in Dubai because fees change by course. Use these patterns when you compare.

  • Indian campuses such as BITS Pilani Dubai, Amity and Manipal are often lower in cost than UK, US or Australian campuses for similar subjects.
  • Humanities and business programmes usually cost less than engineering, architecture or medicine.
  • Diploma and foundation pathways cost less again. GBS Dubai, for example, offers Pearson BTEC foundation, HNC and HND programmes with routes to top up degrees with UK partner universities. It is a diploma pathway, not a full university degree from day one.
  • Scholarships of 15% to 100% are offered by several institutions, including Heriot-Watt and CUD. Most awards are partial and merit based.

How to check if a university in Dubai is genuine before you apply

  1. Confirm the institution is licensed by KHDA (for free zone campuses) or MoHESR (for federally licensed universities).
  2. Check that your exact programme is accredited, not just the university.
  3. Ask which university issues your final degree certificate and transcript.
  4. Ask how graduates obtain UAE recognition or equivalency and whether the university is part of MoHESR's Automatic Recognition initiative.
  5. Check recent QS or regional rankings on the official QS World University Rankings site rather than a marketing page.
  6. Read the refund policy for tuition and visa deposits before paying.

Admission requirements for universities in Dubai

Requirements vary by university and course, but most ask for the following.

  • Bachelor's: Class 12 marksheet, with many programmes accepting around 60% to 75% and competitive courses asking for more.
  • Master's: A recognised bachelor's degree, often around 55% to 60% or a 3.0 GPA, plus a CV and statement of purpose. Some MBAs need work experience or GMAT.

  • Documents: Passport, academic transcripts, passport photos, and financial proof for tuition and living costs.

Dubai vs UK vs Australia: when does Dubai make sense?

Dubai makes the most sense when you want an international degree closer to home, a lower total cost than a Western city, and early work experience in a tax free job market. It makes less sense if permanent residency is your top priority.

If you are also weighing other countries, compare our guides to studying in the UK and studying in Australia, or browse our lists of the top universities in Italy and top universities in Sweden.

Frequently asked questions about universities in Dubai

Which is the best university in Dubai in 2026?

It depends on what you mean by best. By the QS World University Rankings 2027, Zayed University (588th) is the highest ranked university with a Dubai campus, followed by Canadian University Dubai (joint 616th) and American University in Dubai (joint 620th). Canadian University Dubai calls itself the top ranked university based in Dubai. If you want a degree from a globally top 100 university, the University of Birmingham Dubai awards the same degree as its UK parent, which QS ranks 68th.

Which Dubai universities are in the QS World University Rankings 2027?

Four institutions with Dubai operations are ranked in their own name: Zayed University (588), Canadian University Dubai (joint 616), American University in Dubai (joint 620) and University of Dubai (781 to 790). Branch campuses such as Birmingham, Wollongong, Heriot Watt and Middlesex are ranked through their parent universities.

Are universities in Dubai good for Indian students?

Yes, for many students. Dubai is a short flight from India, has a large Indian community, and hosts campuses of BITS Pilani, Manipal, Amity, Symbiosis, SP Jain and IIM Ahmedabad. The key checks are licensing by KHDA or MoHESR, recognition of the degree in India and the UAE, and whether your course leads to the job you want.

How much does it cost to study at a university in Dubai?

Undergraduate tuition usually falls between about AED 40,000 and AED 100,000 a year, with engineering, medicine and premium branch campuses costing more. Living costs for a student sharing a flat are commonly AED 3,000 to AED 5,000 a month. Budget separately for visa, medical, Emirates ID, health insurance and a security deposit.

Can international students work while studying in Dubai?

Yes, but only with a No Objection Certificate from your university and a work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE). Term time hours are commonly capped at around 15 to 20 hours a week depending on your university, with full time work allowed in official breaks. A student visa on its own does not allow you to work.

Is a Dubai branch campus degree the same as the main campus degree?

At most established branch campuses the degree certificate is issued by the parent university and is the same as the home campus award. University of Birmingham Dubai and Murdoch University Dubai both state this. Always confirm in writing that your certificate will not mention the campus in a way that affects recognition, and check UAE equivalency rules before you enrol.

Can I get PR in Dubai after studying?

No. The UAE does not offer permanent residency in the way Canada or Australia do. After graduation most students move to an employer sponsored work visa. Top graduates may qualify for a long term Golden Visa, which is renewable but is not PR or citizenship.

Can I get a UAE Golden Visa after graduating from a Dubai university?

Possibly, if you are an outstanding graduate. Abu Dhabi's official guidance requires a GPA of at least 3.5 from a Class A university or 3.8 from a Class B university, graduation within the last two years, and a degree attested by the Ministry. Graduates of a globally top 100 university need a GPA of at least 3.5.

Which is the cheapest university in Dubai for international students?

Tuition varies by course, so compare the same programme across universities. Indian branch campuses and vocational pathways are usually lower cost than British, American or Australian campuses. Pearson BTEC pathways such as GBS Dubai start lower still, but they are diploma routes rather than a full university degree.

Which university in Dubai is best for an MBA?

Popular options include American University in Dubai, whose MBA is AACSB accredited, the one year MBA at IIM Ahmedabad's Dubai campus, SP Jain School of Global Management, Hult International Business School and University of Birmingham Dubai. Compare accreditation, class profile, placement data and total cost rather than rank alone.

Are there public universities in Dubai for international students?

Dubai has federal public institutions such as Zayed University, but they mainly serve Emirati students and take a small international cohort. Most international students in Dubai study at private universities or international branch campuses.

Does the University of Birmingham have a campus in Dubai?

Yes. University of Birmingham Dubai is based in Dubai International Academic City. It was the first global top 100 and Russell Group university to open a campus in Dubai, and it awards the same degree as the UK campus.

Is IELTS required to study in Dubai?

Most English taught bachelor's and master's programmes ask for proof of English, usually IELTS, PTE, TOEFL or an accepted school English result. Requirements vary by university and course. Some foundation and diploma pathways accept students without IELTS and test English internally.
