1. University of Porto

This university is a public research university located in porto established in 1911 and it is the second largest portuguese university. Earlier the university was primarily based on higher education and the name of the institution was Polytechnic Academy. The establishment of the university was after the proclamation of the Portuguese republic and the university has more than 100 years of experience.

2. University of Lisbon

This is a public research university located in Lisbon where it was established in 1911 and it is the largest university in portugal. The current university was formed by the merging of two former public universities; the merging process started in 2011 and came officially in 2012. The motto of the university is “To the Light” and the university is divided into 18 schools and six specialized research areas.

3. University of Aveiro

This university is a public research university located in Aveiro established in 1973 and the university was founded for providing polytechnic education in Aveiro. It is a public research university mainly focused on robotics, bioinformatics, sea sciences, materials and the main campus is located in the city. The motto of the university is “Thinking, making, doing” and the university was founded by an announcement in a meeting conducted in the Museum of Aveiro.

4. University of Coimbra

This university is a public research university located in Coimbra, Portugal, it was first established in Lisbon in 1290 but the university was relocated to Coimbra in 1537. It is one of the oldest universities in the world still in operation and the oldest university in Portugal. Based on the architecture and the historical traditions this university has been declared as a World heritage site by UNESCO in 2013.

5. New University of Lisbon (NOVA)

It is also known as NOVA, established in 1973  as a public research university in Lisbon. It is the newest public university in Lisbon and it was established in the demand for higher education in Lisbon and its metropolitan areas. Earlier the institution was only focused on graduate programs but later in 1977 the university expanded the teaching and research courses.

6. University of Minho

This university was established in 1973 based in Minho as a public research university in Portugal and the university is divided into 4 campuses. The formation of the university was to provide education in the region of Minho where that place is significant for economic activity and for the youth population. The motto of the university is “Examining things in themselves: this is the true way of knowing”. The university is also famous for the number of the citations of its published papers.

7. ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon

It is a public tertiary educational institution located in Lisbon which was founded in 1972, starting with three degree programmes and 296 students in portugal. Formally the university was called Higher Institute of Business and Labour Sciences and became a university status in 2009. In 2019 the university adopted a new visual branding with a new logo and graphic norms and got the name changed to ISCTE. When the university celebrated 50 years , it opened a new branch in Sintra with eight degrees.

This university is a concordat university located in Lisbon which was established in 1967 and it is also known as Católica or UCP. 9. University of Algarve

It is a public higher education institution located in the southern part of Portugal which was established in 1979. The university’s main campus is located in the capital city of Algarve, Faro and the other campus is located in Portimao. This university is the only university created by the law from parliament and the university opened the medical school in 2009

10. University of Beira Interior (UBI)

UBI is a public research university located in Covilha, Portugal which was established in 1979. This institution was the first higher education institution which was established by the government as a polytechnical institute in Covilha. The institution was promoted to higher educational institution level by the government in 1979 and in 1986 the university got full university status. UBI is one the youngest public universities in portugal and it has been ranked best universities by the world ranking.
