Australia Immigration FAQs

What is the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa?

The subclass 186 visa is a permanent residence visa for skilled workers nominated by an approved Australian employer. The employer must show a genuine need for the role. You must then meet the skill, English and age rules for your stream.

Is the subclass 186 visa a permanent visa?

Yes. Subclass 186 grants permanent residence from day one. You can live and work in Australia, access Medicare and later apply for citizenship if you meet the residence rules.

What are the 186 visa requirements?

You need a nomination from an approved employer and an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List for Direct Entry. Direct Entry applicants usually need a positive skills assessment, at least three years of relevant experience, competent English and to be under 45 unless an exemption applies. Health and character checks apply to everyone.

What is the difference between the 186 Direct Entry and Temporary Residence Transition streams?

Direct Entry suits workers who have not worked for the employer in Australia, including those applying from India. Temporary Residence Transition suits 482 visa holders who have completed two years of eligible sponsored work. A third route, the Labour Agreement stream, applies only where the employer holds a labour agreement.

Can I use CELPIP for the 186 or 482 visa?

Do not assume so. Home Affairs accepts only the English tests on its approved list, and a score from a test outside that list will not count. Check the list on immi.homeaffairs.gov.au before you book a test.

What is the 482 visa and is it still called the Temporary Skill Shortage visa?

The subclass 482 is Australia’s main temporary employer sponsored work visa. Since 7 December 2024 it has been called the Skills in Demand visa, and the subclass number stayed the same. Many people still search for the older name, “Temporary Skill Shortage” or “TSS”.

Can the 482 visa lead to permanent residence?

Yes, for most workers. After two years of eligible sponsored work you may qualify for the 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream. Time with any approved sponsor can count, but the 482 does not guarantee PR. Your occupation, employer and visa history must still meet the 186 rules.

How much does the 482 visa cost?

There are several separate costs: the visa application charge, the employer’s nomination fee and the Skilling Australians Fund levy. Add skills assessment, medical and police check costs on top. Employers should not ask you to cover sponsorship costs. Fees rise every 1 July, so confirm current figures with Home Affairs.

Can Indian citizens apply for the Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462)?

Yes, but the process starts with a ballot. You must be 18 to 30, hold an Indian passport and be randomly selected before you can apply. Home Affairs caps first 462 visas for India at 1,000 per program year. A first visa allows a stay of up to 12 months.

How long does it take to process an Australia PR visa such as the 186 or 190?

Processing times depend on the visa subclass, the stream and how complete your application is. Health, character and employer checks can add time. Home Affairs publishes current processing time guides for each subclass, so check the official page for the latest range. Lodging a complete application with every document is the best way to avoid delays.

What are the conditions of the 190 visa after it is granted?

The subclass 190 is a permanent visa for skilled workers nominated by a state or territory. You are expected to live and work in the nominating state or territory for at least two years. The nomination adds 5 points to your claim. Each state sets its own occupation lists and criteria.

What is the difference between the 190 visa and the 491 visa?

The 190 is permanent from the start. The 491 is a provisional visa valid for five years, and you must live and work in a designated regional area. After three years of meeting the conditions you may apply for permanent residence through the subclass 191. The 491 adds 15 points, which helps lower scoring applicants.

Which is the best Australian PR visa for me: 189, 190 or 186?

It depends on your profile. The 189 is points tested and needs no sponsor, but invitations are competitive. The 190 and 491 need state or family nomination, and the 186 needs an employer. A migration agent can compare your points, occupation and English score against all three.

How do the partner visas 820, 801 and 309 work?

They are two stage visas. Applying from inside Australia, you first get the temporary 820 and later the permanent 801. Applying from outside, you get the 309 and then the permanent 100. You must prove a genuine and continuing relationship, and the fees are among the highest of any Australian visa.

How do I choose a MARA registered agent or the best Australia immigration consultant in Delhi?

Only a MARA registered migration agent (or a lawyer) can legally give Australian immigration advice. Ask for the agent’s MARN and check it on the MARA website. Ask for a written fee agreement before you pay and avoid anyone who promises a guaranteed visa. Consultation fees vary, so compare the scope of work as well as the price.

How much do Australia immigration consultants charge in India?

Fees depend on the visa type, the number of applicants and how complex your case is. A professional fee is separate from the government charges paid to Home Affairs and other bodies. Ask for an itemised written quote that splits the two. Compare what each stage includes, such as skills assessment support, the state or employer nomination and the final visa lodgement, before you choose.
