Eligibility FOR SUBCLASS 485
The Australia Graduate Temporary (Subclass 485) Visa is aimed at evaluating students’ educational qualifications. It helps keep skilled talent in Australia and is a strong pathway to permanent residency. To be eligible, you need to meet these main criteria:
- Be under 35 years old
- Have Australian educational qualifications
- At least you have completed your 2 years of study in Australia
- Demonstrate English language proficiency
- Have an occupation listed on the Skilled Occupations List
- Have relevant work experience
- Pass health and character checks
Changes to the 485 Graduate Work Stream Visa
The Department of Home Affairs has temporarily removed the need for applicants of the Subclass 485 visa in the Graduate Work Stream to nominate a skilled occupation or get a skills assessment for applications made between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023. This change aligns the Graduate Work Stream with the Post-Study Work Stream in this aspect. These amendments will allow a wider range of grad uates with degrees, diplomas, and trade qualifications, who meet the Australian study requirement but whose occupations are not on the current eligible list, to live and work in Australia for a temporary period.
Is English test required for temporary graduate visa (subclass 485)
You may need to provide evidence of your English proficiency as part of your visa application. Consider taking the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) an English language proficiency test used for study, work, and migration. The Department of Home Affairs accepts both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Since GIEC GLOBAL India partners with IELTS, you can take the test at any of our Australian IELTS test centers.
Post-Higher Education Work stream (former Post-Study Work stream)
The maximum eligible age for Post-Higher Education Work Stream applicants is now 35 years or under at the time of application.Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders can still apply if they are under 50. Applicants who no longer meet the age requirement due to this change will not be eligible
The 2 year extension for certain degrees will no longer be available.
The new stay periods are as follows:
- Bachelor’s degree (including honours): Up to 2 years
- Master’s (coursework and extended): Up to 2 years
- Master’s (research) and doctoral degree (PhD): Up to 3 years
- Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders: Up to 5 years
For Indian nationals, as per the Australia India โ Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), the stay periods remain:
- Bachelor’s degree (including honours): Up to 2 years
- Bachelor’s degree with first-class honours in STEM (including ICT): Up to 3 years
- Master’s (coursework, extended, and research): Up to 3 years
- Doctoral degrees (PhD): Up to 4 years
