AASW Assessment and English Requirement for Social Workers

Before a social worker can apply for an Australian visa, they need a tick of approval from AASW, the group that checks if your social work degree is good enough to count.

AASW checks 5 things:

  1. Your degree is actually social work, not psychology or something similar
  2. It’s a real, recognized social work qualification in your country
  3. What you learned matches what Australian students learn
  4. You did at least 1000 hours of supervised placement work
  5. Your English is strong enough

The big one people get tripped up on is English. You need 7.0 in IELTS, in every single section (listening, reading, writing, speaking). Not an average of 7, every band has to hit 7. Since May 2026, if you miss just one section, you can retake only that section instead of the whole test again.

Timing-wise, if you studied overseas, expect 3 to 5 months for AASW to review you. If you studied in Australia, it’s much faster, around a month. Once you pass, that approval is good for 3 years, plenty of time to apply for your visa.

What the AASW assessment actually checks

AASW is the body the Australian government has appointed to assess this occupation. Every application is measured against five fixed criteria.

Criterion 1

Your degree must be a dedicated social work qualification, not a general social science, psychology or community development degree.

Criterion 2

That qualification must be recognised as a professional social work qualification in your country of study.

Criterion 3

Your learning outcomes need to be comparable to what graduates of an AASW accredited Australian program learn.

Criterion 4

You need at least 1000 hours of supervised field education across two placements with different focus areas.

Criterion 5

You need to meet the AASW English language policy, covered in full further down this guide.

Outcome

A positive AASW assessment is valid for three years and supports visa subclasses 189, 190, 491, 482 and 186.

The field education requirement

AASW asks for at least 1000 hours of supervised field education, spread across at least two placements in different practice areas. At least one of those placements has to involve direct practice with clients. This is usually built into an accredited degree already, so the main task is making sure your university can confirm the hours and placement details in writing, since AASW often checks this directly with the institution.

Documents you need to apply

  • Certified copies of your degree certificate and full academic transcripts
  • Evidence your program is recognised as a professional social work qualification in its country of origin
  • Placement records showing hours, supervisor details and the practice areas covered
  • Your IELTS Academic test report
  • Proof of identity, usually your passport

If you are claiming the optional skilled employment assessment for extra points, you will also need detailed employer references describing your exact duties and client groups.

How long the AASW assessment takes

Qualification typeTypical processing time
Overseas social work qualificationAround 12 to 20 weeks
AASW accredited Australian degree (international students)Around 3 to 4 weeks
Renewal of a previous assessmentAround 2 weeks
Optional skilled employment add onAround 3 to 5 weeks after a positive base assessment

Applications move slower when documents are incomplete, when a university takes time to confirm details, or during seasonal peaks. A complete, well organised application the first time is the biggest factor in keeping your timeline on track.

AASW fees in 2026

Fees depend on the type of application, whether you apply from inside or outside Australia, and whether you add optional assessments like skilled employment or a doctorate review. Published figures vary across sources, with some quoting a few hundred dollars for a base eligibility check and others showing well over two thousand dollars for a full international qualification assessment with GST included. Because AASW updates its fee schedule periodically, always confirm the exact current amount on the official AASW fee page before you budget for the application.

The English language policy explained

Most general skilled migration applicants only need a competent level of English. Social workers need more. AASW requires an overall IELTS Academic score of 7.0, with no band below 7.0 across listening, reading, writing and speaking. AASW only accepts the IELTS Academic test, not PTE or any other test, unless you qualify for an exemption based on having studied in English for several years in an eligible country.

If you do not reach 7.0 in every band on your first attempt, AASW allows you to combine two test sittings within a six month window, provided no individual band falls below 6.5 in either sitting.

New in 2026: the IELTS One Skill Retake

From 20 May 2026, AASW also accepts the IELTS Academic One Skill Retake. This is narrower than the two sitting rule above. To use it, you need at least 7.0 in three of the four components on your first full sitting, with no band below 6.5, and then you retake only the one component that fell short. The retake has to happen within 60 days of your original test, and within 12 months of submitting your AASW application. For an applicant who is strong across the board but consistently loses points on writing, this removes the need to sit the entire test again.

What people get wrong, from real migration forums

Two issues come up again and again in expat and migration communities. The first is the section of the application that asks you to map your learning outcomes against AASW accredited standards. Many applicants find this section confusing and end up going back and forth with their old university several times to get the wording right, so start that conversation early rather than waiting until the rest of your application is ready.

The second is what happens when someone cannot reach IELTS 7.0 for the Social Worker occupation. Some applicants get assessed instead under a different, related category such as welfare worker, hoping for an easier bar to clear. This can backfire if that alternative occupation is not on the same skilled occupation list you need, so check the occupation list carefully before changing direction rather than after.

What happens after a positive assessment

A positive AASW outcome is valid for three years for migration purposes. Once you have it, you can submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect and choose the visa subclass that fits your points and preferred state, whether that is the independent subclass 189, a state nominated 190, or a regional 491.

A simple checklist to start

  1. Confirm your degree is specifically a social work qualification, not an adjacent field.
  2. Contact your university early to confirm transcripts, placement records and the learning outcomes mapping.
  3. Book your IELTS Academic test, aiming for 7.0 in every band, and plan for a possible retake.
  4. Gather certified copies of every required document before you start the online application.
  5. Apply through the AASW portal and track your application status until a decision is issued.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a positive AASW assessment valid?

A positive AASW assessment is valid for three years for migration purposes, giving you a reasonable window to complete your Expression of Interest and visa application.

Can I use PTE instead of IELTS for the AASW assessment?

No. AASW only accepts the IELTS Academic test for the English requirement, unless you qualify for a specific education based exemption.

What if my degree is in psychology or community development, not social work?

It will not meet AASW criteria. Your qualification has to be a dedicated, specific social work degree to pass the first assessment criterion.

Do I need AASW membership to migrate?

No. The migration eligibility assessment is what visa applications require. AASW membership is a separate, optional step that some employers prefer.

What happens if my AASW assessment comes back negative?

You can usually request a review or reapply with stronger evidence, depending on which criterion was not met. Getting clear feedback on the specific reason is the first step before reapplying.
