Travellers usually use it as a means of gaining entry into the Schengen area of the European Union. The other visa is known as the Swedish Residence Permit which is a long stay visa that can be obtained for a number of reasons. In order to legally enter Sweden for the purpose of studying, students must apply for a Residence Permit or a Sweden study visa.

The Swedish Embassy and Consulates in India handle the processing of resident permits which are issued by the Swedish Migration Agency in Sweden.
