1. University of Latvia
The university was established in 1919 as a public research university in Riga, Latvia. Initially it was named as Higher school of Latvia, but later in 1923 it received the current name University of latvia. The motto of the university is “For science and fatherland”. This university consists of 13 departments and it is the largest university in Latvia

2. Riga Technical University (RTU)
Riga technical university was established in 1862 and it is the oldest technical university in the Baltic countries. Earlier the university was known as Riga Polytechnical Institute and Riga Polytechnicum, in 1990 the university was renamed as Riga Technical university. RTU has ranked 57th among all of the universities in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. At first the language of instruction was done by German as most of the lecturers were from Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

3. Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU)
This university used to be called Latvia University of Agriculture, established in 1938 with the motto of “For the Growth of the Fatherland”. This university is a public university specialization in agricultural science, forestry, food technology and related areas. In 1863 this university was an agricultural department in Riga Polytechnical institute and later in 1919 became a faculty of agriculture at University of Latvia. This university became an independent university in 1939.

4. Riga Stradins University(RSU)
In the city of Riga, Latvia, RSU is a public research university established in 1950. The motto of the university is “The art is long, life is short”. Initially the university was only with 45 departments. This university is a state funded university which focuses more on healthcare and social works in Latvia. This is the only university traditionally integrated in the health sector. This university is autonomous and offers education and research opportunities in the field of health, social and natural science.

5. Daugavpils University (DU)
This is a public research university and largest regional university in Daugavpils, Latvia founded in 1921. The motto of the university is “Through knowledge you win”. In 1921 it was founded as a teachers college and university got its present name in October 2001. It is the largest educational institution in eastern Latvia and it is a member of the European University Association. Daugavpils Medical College in 2018 became an autonomous institution becoming integrated with the university.

8. Transport and Telecommunication Institute (TTI)
This institution was established in 1919, it is the largest university accredited non-state technical higher educational and scientific institution in the capital city of Latvia. Earlier this was called The School of Aviation and established in Kiev in May 1919, but in 1945 the school was relocated to Riga.

9. Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences
This university was founded in 1996 as a higher education institution in Valmiera, Latvia. It was founded to promote the economic and political development of Latvia. Until 2001 the institution had only regional government status but from later the university got state educational status. Vidzeme University was the first institution in the Baltic states holding international Eco university status.
