1.The University of Auckland

This university is the largest university in New Zealand by enrollment and it is a public research university established in Auckland in 1883. At first the university was opened as a constituent college of University of New Zealand with the motto of “By natural ability and hard work”. In 1970 Queen Elizabeth opened the school of medicine building at Grafton. The university has five campuses and the main one with high number of student enrolment each year is the city campus. This university has an overseas campus in China.

2. University of Otago

Otago is a public research university founded in 1869 based in Otago, New Zealand. It is the oldest university in New Zealand and the oldest universities in Oceania. This university is famous for the student life in New Zealand, especially sharing accommodation, calling by nicknames and so on. The motto of the university is “Dare to be wise” and the graduation song of the university is “Let us rejoice, while we are young”, which addresses the student life. This university magazine named Critic is the  New Zealand’s longest running student magazine.

3. Massey University

This university is a public research university which was established in 1927 with the motto of “Let knowledge flourish”. This university is the only university in New Zealand offering degrees in aviation and veterinary medicine. Agricultural programmes offered from this university has the world ranking and it is the 60th according to the QS world ranking. The university is the first non – engineering degree offering masters of Aviation, to be recognized by the Royal Aeronautical Society and has ISO accreditation.

4. Victoria University of Wellington

By act of parliament this university was established in 1897 in Wellington, New zealand. This is a public research university with the motto of “Wisdom is more to be desired than gold”. Victoria university was initially named as Victoria University college and it got its name dedicated in honor of Queen Victoria, on the occasion of the monarchy’s 60th anniversary. This university is known for the programmes in law and humanities.

6. University of Canterbury

This is a public research university founded in 1873 as a Canterbury college in  Christchurch, New Zealand. It is the second oldest university in New Zealand. 7. Lincoln University

This university is the oldest agricultural teaching institution in the southern hemisphere and it is the smallest university in New zealand by enrollment. 8. Auckland University of Technology (AUT)

This university was originally established in 1895 and got university status in 2000, it is a public research university in New Zealand. AUT is the third largest university in New Zealand by student enrolment and the largest campus is located in the Auckland city, Wellesley Street.  The motto of the university is “For the changing world”.

9. Auckland Institute of Studies (AIS)

It is a privately owned tertiary education in Auckland and established in 1990 in Ackland’s shopping center. Later this institution moved to Mt Albert in Auckland in 1993 as a tertiary campus. This institution has two campuses in Mt Albert, St Helens Campus and Asquith Campus. AIS offers courses in  business, information technology, tourism management, and hospitality management. English teacher training also offered by this university.

10. Otago Polytechnic

This is a public tertiary education institution in Dunedin, and also this institution has two campuses in  Cromwell and Auckland. This polytechnic college was established in 1889 providing evening classes for working people. In 1914 the name of the institution was King Edward Technical College. College splitted into secondary college and polytechnic in 1966.
