1. University of Oslo

This university is a public research university located in Oslo, Norway established in 1811 and it is considered as the oldest university in Norway and one of the country’s leading universities. It is one of the highest ranked universities in Nordic countries and the former name of the university was Royal Frederick University as a common university for Denmark Norway and called The Royal Frederick’s. The university got the current name in 1939 and this was the only university until 1946.

2. University of Bergen

It is a public research university located in Bergen, Norway established by the act of parliament in 1946. This university is the second oldest university  and one of the four established universities in norway. This university is ranked in the top 50 among the universities in the world in the fields of earth and marine science. This university is a part of Coimbra group and Norway’s oldest and highest ranked universities

3. Norwegian University of Science & Technology (NTNU)

NTNU is the largest university in Norway in terms of enrollment and it is a public research university established in 1996 in Trondheim, Norway. This university has two regional campuses in Gjøvik and Ålesund and the main campus is located in Trondheim. The motto of the university is “Knowledge for a better world” and it mainly offers education in fields of engineering and technology. This university is considered as the youngest university in Norway and it was formed by the merging of six educational institutes in Trondheim.

4.University of Tromso

This university is also called The Arctic University of Norway and it is a state university located in Tromso, Norway. Tromso university was established in 1968 by a parliament act and it is the world’s northernmost university opened in 1972. This university is the largest educational research institution in the Northern part of Norway and the sixth largest university in Norway. The motto of the university is “Driving force in the North” and the university mainly focused on auroral light research, space science, fishery science, biotechnology activities.

5. Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU)

NMBU was established in 1859 with the motto of “Knowledge for life” and it is a public research university located in Ås, Norway. The institution was established for higher education in agriculture and the institution got university status in 2005. Later in 2014 the college merged with  Norwegian School of Veterinary Science and this university is the only university in Norway providing veterinary education.

6. University of Stavanger (UiS)

UiS is a public research university located in Stavanger, Norway and was established in 2005 with the motto of “Challenge the known, explore the unknown”. The Stavanger University College was founded in 1994 by the merging of two institutes and in 2005 the college got the university status by the government and renamed to University of Stavanger. This university is the first university in Norway formed by the merging of two institutions.

7. Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL)

This university was formed by the merging of five independent campuses in 2017 and it is a Norwegian public institution of higher education. The main campus of the university is located in Kronstad, Norway and the oldest program for teacher education was delivered in Stord. HVL is one the largest higher education institutions in Norway with more than 16,500 students enrolment .

8. University College of Southeast Norway (USN)

This university is commonly known as USN and it is a state university established in 2018 by the merging of three education institutions in Norway in 2014 – 2016. The institution got the university status in 2018. This university is the fourth largest university in Norway and has eight campuses. USN offers optician study in Kongsberg campus and also this university offers more than 300 bachelor’s and master’s degree courses.

9. Oslo Metropolitan University (Oslomet)

This university was formed by the merging of many vocational colleges in the greater Oslo area and it is a state university established in 2018 in Oslo and Kjeller in Norway. Oslomet is the second youngest university in Norway and merged from the largest university college in Norway called Oslo and Akershus University College in 2018. Pilestredet campus and Kjeller campus are the two campuses of Oslomet , Pilestredet is the largest campus located in the centre of Oslo and Kjeller is the second largest campus located outside of Oslo.

10. University of Agder

This university is a public research university located within two campuses in Kristiansand and Grimstad, Norway and was established in 1994. This university was formerly known as Agder College and Agder University College and got university status in 2017. The institution was established as a university college in1994 and merged with Agder university college and five education institution.
